Importer Exporter Code

An Import Export Code (IEC) is a 10-digit code essential for Indian businesses involved in import and export activities. Issued by the DGFT under the Ministry of Commerce, this code is a prerequisite for customs clearance and international transactions.
Importers require IEC to facilitate customs procedures and make payments to foreign entities, while exporters need it to legally dispatch goods abroad and receive international payments. The IEC Number is a fundamental requirement for any importer or exporter operating within India.
Benefits of Importer Exporter Code
Here are the key advantages of obtaining an Importer Exporter Code (IEC) to unlock seamless international trade opportunities for your business:
Global Market Access
IEC registration enables traders, including online e-commerce operators, to expand their business internationally.
Minimal Compliance
Post-registration, businesses face no significant compliance requirements, making ongoing business operations simpler.
Government Scheme Access
Registered businesses can avail themselves of government schemes such as the Merchandise Export from India Scheme (MEIS), the Service Export from India Scheme (SEIS), and others facilitated by customs and export promotion.
Easy Application Process
Obtaining an IEC Code is straightforward, requiring only basic documents, which streamlines the registration process.
Validity of Import Export Code
Import Export Code (IEC) offers lifelong validity upon issuance, eliminating the need for renewal or updates for import-export transactions. It serves as a mandatory requirement for individuals, companies, partnerships, LLPs, and other entities engaged in import-export activities, ensuring compliance for all such transactions. Even businesses planning future import-export ventures must secure an IEC in advance.
Situations Where IEC Code Is Required
- Customs Clearance: Importers must present the IEC code to customs authorities when clearing shipments. It serves as a unique identifier for tracking and regulating imported goods.
- Export Shipments: Exporters need to mention the IEC on all shipping documents. Customs ports require the IEC to validate the legality of exported goods and for proper documentation.
- Bank Transactions: For importers, the IEC is necessary when transferring funds internationally through banks. Banks require the IEC to ensure compliance with foreign exchange regulations.
- Receipt of Foreign Currency: When exporters receive payments in foreign currency into their bank accounts, the bank requires the IEC for processing and compliance purposes.
Documents Required for the Process
To register for an Import Export Code (IEC) in India, you need to submit several essential documents to the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT). Here’s a detailed list of the documents required for IEC registration:
For Companies (or LLPs):
- PAN Card of the company (Applicant’s PAN if a proprietorship)
- Incorporation Certificate issued by the Registrar of Companies (RoC)
- Address Proof of the company’s registered office (e.g., Electricity Bill, Rent Agreement, Sale Deed)
- Cancelled Cheque Leaf or Banker’s Certificate of the current account in the name of the company
For Individual Proprietors:
- PAN Card of the proprietor
- Aadhaar Card (or any other ID proof such as Driving License, Voter ID)
- Address Proof of the proprietor’s place of residence (e.g., Electricity Bill, Rent Agreement)
For Partnership Firms:
- PAN Card of the partnership firm (if available)
- Partnership Deed
- Address Proof of the partnership firm’s registered office (e.g., Electricity Bill, Rent Agreement, Sale Deed)
- Cancelled Cheque Leaf or Banker’s Certificate of the current account in the name of the partnership firm
Additional Notes:
- PAN Card: This is mandatory for all applicants, whether it’s an individual, company, or partnership firm.
- Address Proof: Ensure that the address proof documents are recent (usually within the last three months) and clearly show the registered office address.
- Bank Details: A cancelled cheque leaf or banker’s certificate is required to verify the current account details in the name of the applicant entity.
Exemptions of Import Export Code
Exemptions from obtaining an Import Export Code (IEC) are granted under specific circumstances in India. Here are the details:
- Personal Import and Export: Individuals involved in import/export activities for personal reasons that are not connected to trade, agriculture, or manufacturing are exempt from obtaining an IEC.
- Small Consignments to Nepal and Myanmar: Importers and exporters sending goods to/from Nepal and Myanmar through specific border areas (Indo-Myanmar border areas and China via Namgaya Shipkila, Gunji, and Nathula ports) are exempt from IEC requirements if the value of the single consignment does not exceed ₹25,000.
- SCOMET Items: Items listed in Appendix-3 of Schedule 2 of the Indian Trade Classification (ITC) are not exempt from IEC requirements. These include materials, organisms, special chemicals, equipment, and technologies (SCOMET) that require strict regulation due to their sensitive nature.
- Government Ministries/Departments: Ministries and departments of both central and state governments are exempt from obtaining an IEC for their import/export activities.
Application of Exemption:
- Individuals or entities eligible for exemption should ensure they meet the criteria specified for each exemption category.
- For SCOMET items, compliance with export control regulations remains mandatory despite the IEC exemption.

The Import Export Code (IEC) is issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), which operates under the Ministry of Commerce of the Government of India. It is issued in electronic form (e-IEC).
An IEC number is valid indefinitely but must be updated annually between April to June to prevent deactivation. Updates during this period incur no fee.
For security during issuance and registration, a Digital Signature Certificate (DSC) of Class-2 or Class-3 is mandated by the DGFT. These certificates are issued by certifying agencies in India approved by the Controller of Certifying Authorities (CCA).
